A research team led by Professor Ji Xing from the School of Aerospace Engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University has won the 2025 Hongshan Open Source Star ProjectThird Prize for their GKS2D-str gas kinetic scheme solver. This achievement recognizes the solver’s innovative contributions to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its commitment to open-source principles.

The GKS2D-str open-source solver is built upon the gas kinetic scheme (GKS) originally developed by Professor Xu Kun of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Relying on the National Key Laboratory of Structural Strength and Life of Major Equipment under Complex Operating Environments and the Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Aircraft Operating Environment and Control, the solver is designed to address the simulation demands of extreme strong discontinuity flows in fields such as high-speed aircraft and inertial confinement fusion. It aims to lower the research threshold for developing high-precision CFD methods. Its key innovations lie in integrating high-order GKS with a cross-platform open-source architecture, resulting in clear, user-friendly code with detailed bilingual comments, flexible configuration across different grid types and precision levels (2nd to 5th order), and strong collaborative resources between Xi’an Jiaotong University and HKUST, backed by rigorous validation on extreme flow cases.

This award not only recognizes the team's long-term dedication to high-precision CFD algorithms but also highlights the role of open-source collaboration in driving research innovation. The team plans to further enhance the solver’s performance, expand its capabilities to three dimensions and complex geometries, and continue fostering an open, collaborative CFD ecosystem through theHongshan Open Source Platformto support major national initiatives and industrial simulation needs.

The Hongshan Open Source Platform(osredm.com), established by the Beijing Advanced Institute for Big Data Technology, is a national-level collaborative research platform focused on strategic technology fields. Centered on "open source + crowdsourcing," it integrates global intellectual resources to promote technological breakthroughs and the transformation of achievements. Its Open Source Star Project Award honors outstanding projects that demonstrate significant contributions, innovation, and application potential. The 2025 Red Source Open Source Conference announced this year’s award recipients, which included Xi’an Jiaotong University, Qiyuan Laboratory, andthe Academy of Military Sciences, among six organizations selected through an independent review process.More than 60 experts from organizations including the CCF Open Source Development Committee, National University of Defense Technology, Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Institute of Computing Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the conference.
