School of Aerospace Engineering
School of Aerospace Engineering, established on 10 April 2005, is an integration of two departments, one state key laboratory and one national-level education center: Department of Engineering Mechanics, Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics Engineering, the State Key Laboratory for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures and the National Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.
The school has gained a national and international reputation for its innovative educational programming. The School offers undergraduate programs in Engineering Mechanics and Flight Vehicle Design and Engineering. It also offers master's and PhD programs in Mechanics and Aerospace Science and Technology (both are first-level disciplines), as well as postdoctoral program in Mechanics, of which Solid Mechanics is among the first batch of doctoral programs as well as the national key disciplines acknowledged by China.
With the International Center for Applied Mechanics, established in 2012, and an increasing international student and staff population, the School has developed into a truly cosmopolitan environment for high education, emphasizing both fundamentals and applications. The school has extensive research collaborations and student exchange programs with universities and institutes worldwide, such as in USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Singapore, Korea etc.The school has extensive research collaborations and student exchange programs with top international universities and institutes from USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Singapore, Korea etc.
At present, the school has approximately 176 faculty and staff members, including 49 professors, 44 associate professors and 10 lecturers. Most of faculty members obtained their PhD degrees from top universities and institutions, such as: Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Tokyo, Columbia University, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University etc.
As one of the first batch of department of Engineering Mechanics (1957) in China, the school has a reputation for innovative educational programs, cutting-edge research, leading faculty, and aspiring students. It has earned a strong reputation as a center for academic excellence. Many Alumni of the School have gained an international reputation in the field of solid mechanics and applied mechanics and become international recognized academician and scholars, for example: Prof. Huajian GAO, the NAS (National Academy of Sciences) member, the NAE (National Academy Engineering) member, Foreign Academician of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences), and Academician of GA (German Academy Sciences); Prof. Zhigang SUO, the NAS (National Academy of Sciences) member and the NAE (National Academy Engineering) member.
With the mission of serving the nation and society with high level education and scientific research, the school strives to prepare students to deal with major aerospace engineering challenges of the future in a sustainable manner by providing high quality, innovative educational programs and offering interdisciplinary /multidisciplinary research opportunities. Innovative programs, cutting edge research, leading faculty and aspiring students, all these elements have been brought together in a dynamic and supportive environment by the School at Xi’an Jiaotong University to open up a world of possibilities.
Recently, the mechanics discipline of XJTU has been rated as the A discipline during Double First Class University Plan of China. The Mechanics discipline of XJTU ranked No. 1 in 2017 among the Mechanics disciplines of all universities in China by Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
