|School of Aerospace, Xi’an Jiaotong University|
The School of Aerospace, formed on 10 April 2005, is an integration of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and three mechanics related Divisions. The School (department) has grown from 50 students in the late 1970s to close to about 900 strong today. Today, we are a vibrant community with four departments, one state key laboratory and one national-level education center: Departments of Astronautical Engineering, Departments of Aeronautical Engineering, Departments of Engineering Mechanics, Departments of Scientific Computation and Structural Design, the State Key Laboratory for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures and the National Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center. The school’s mission is to nurture Engineer-Leaders with a global perspective and to lead in science and technology through high-impact research.
The school has gained a national and international reputation for the innovative educational programming offered by each of its four departments. Now, the school offers three Bachelor degrees for undergraduate studies/programme: Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Structure Analysis, Flight Vehicle Design and Engineering. For graduate studies/programme, it offers Master and PhD degrees in Mechanics, Aeronautical and Astronautical Science.
With the International Center for Applied Mechanics, established in 2012, and an increasing international student and staff population, the School has developed into a truly cosmopolitan environment for high education, emphasizing both fundamentals and applications. The school has extensive research collaborations and student exchange programmes with universities and institutes worldwide, such as in USA, UK, Japan, France, Canada, Singapore, Korea etc. As Editor-in-Chiefs, the School sponsors three international journals and one national core journal: International Journal of Applied Mechanics, International Journal of Aerospace and Lightweight Structures, International Journal of Computational Materials Science and Engineering, Chinese Journal of Applied Mechanics.
Currently, the school has approximately 128 staff members, including 90 faculty members (38 fully professors, 36 associate professors and 16 assistant professor) and 38 technicians and administration staff. Most of faculty members obtained their PhD degrees from top universities and institutions, such as: Harvard University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, University of Tokyo, Columbia University, National University of Singapore, Tsinghua University, Xi’an Jiaotong University… The School has been highly ranked among our peer institutions nationally and globally. Many faculty members are nationally and internationally known for their unique research expertise, and value teaching and mentoring highly among their academic pursuits.
As one of the first department of Engineering Mechanics (1957) in China, the School of Aerospace at Xi’an Jiaotong University has a reputation for innovative programs, cutting-edge research, leading faculty, and aspiring students. It has earned a strong reputation as a centre for academic excellence. Alumni of School have gained an international reputation in the field of solid mechanics and applied mechanics. Many alumni have become international recognized academician and scholars, for example: Prof. Zhigang Suo (Harvard University, member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA), Prof. Huajian Gao (Brown University, member of the National Academy of Engineering, USA), et al. On other hand, a number of alumni have held important positions and leaderships in provincial government and central government, as well as in leading industries.
In last ten years, the School has obtained many national level awards, for example: 6 projects won the Second Prize of National Natural Science, 6 projects won National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology as well as National Prize for Scientific and Technological Invention, etc. Furthermore, as chief scientist of 973 project, five key national level 973 projects have been granted since 2005. The school attracts approximately 50 million in annual research funding.
Based on two National-level research and education bases, the State Key Laboratory for Strength and Vibration of Mechanical Structures and the National Mechanics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, the School strives to prepare students to deal with major aerospace engineering challenges of the future in a sustainable manner by providing high quality, innovative educational programmes and offering interdisciplinary /multidisciplinary research opportunities. Innovative programs, cutting edge research, leading faculty and aspiring students, all these elements have been brought together in a dynamic and supportive environment by the School at Xi’an Jiaotong University to open up a world of possibilities.
Welcome to the School of Aerospace. In School of Aerospace, you will pursue a well-rounded education designed to prepare you for a career in Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering.
